Since 1998, our nationally recognized Partnership for Adoptions program has been committed to finding permanent, loving homes for Virginia’s children in the foster care system. About 1,300 children, newborn to age 18, remain waiting for adoptive homes throughout the state. To meet some of our waiting children, click here. And meet more at Adopt Us Kids.org and The Heart Galleries.
These children are in the custody of various departments of social services. Many have experienced neglect and/or abuse and will have risky futures without a permanent family. There are no fees when adopting children from foster care through Children’s Home Society because we believe good kids need good homes. We want to find just the right family to meet the needs of each of these children. Being part of a loving family is important to all of us – especially to a child in the child welfare system.
Many people have misconceptions about the adoption of an older child from foster care. But the process is easier than you think. Click here to learn more.
If you are ready to take the first step toward adopting a child in foster care, call Laura Ash-Brackley at (804) 353-0191, or attend one of our orientations.

Adolescent Workshop Series
CHS has launched its Adolescent Workshop Series (AWS) at Hallmark Youthcare in Richmond. The workshop series will help prepare teens for adoption by addressing issues many youth in foster care face, including trauma, lack of self-esteem, attachment and identity.
Each workshop engages 10 to 20 teens in a six-week, 18-hour program. The curriculum includes building self-esteem, options for and the importance of permanency, building and fostering healthy relationships, forging strong new relationships with caregivers, understanding parental relationships and dealing with separation, grief, loss and trauma.
CHS hopes to organize three to four workshops in 2011, with the next scheduled for children at the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls. If you know of an organization that might be interested in partnering with CHS for future workshops or a child or children in foster care who might benefit from the program, contact Kristin Howell by email or by calling (804) 353-0191.
AWS is made possible thanks to a $45,320 grant from the Altria Companies Employee Community Fund.
